Hopefully you have had your furnace running the past few weeks to keep you and your Charleston, SC home warm during the cold days and nights. If you’ve noticed any strange noises since turning your furnace on, it does not necessarily mean that something is wrong and needs immediate attention. It could be as simple as your ductwork reacting to your furnace being turned on. On the other end, it could mean something is wrong and needs attention such as buzzing or humming sounds. The team here at Terrace Heating & Air is here to help you figure out why your furnace is making strange noises and what to do about it.
Banging or Popping
If you hear a banging or a loud popping sound, it is most likely coming for your ducts. This is a very common sound for your ductwork to make, especially when the system turns on or off. This is just an expansion and contraction of the metal which causes the ducts to make the noise when they are moving (expanding and contracting). This is perfectly normal and is not something to worry about.
Whistling
If you’re hearing a whistling sound, it is usually because air flow is being restricted. This whistling sound is made by your furnace when attempting to draw air and push it when it cannot. This then forces the air through any holes or gaps, creating the whistling sound. This is an easy fix that is usually solved by replacing your air filter. If this does not stop the whistling sound, call in your HVAC professional to take a look.
Grinding
Grinding noises are usually a big sign that you should call your heating and air cooling professional ASAP. The grinding sound you are hearing is most likely due to metal on metal which is pretty scary. These noises typically happy when components in your furnace are broken or loose and they are colliding with other internal components. Call your HVAC professional immediately because this can lead to a breakdown if left unchecked.
Rattling
Rattling is similar to the grinding noise and issue but not as severe. It you hear rattling or a vibration sound, that typically means that something has come a bit loose. If you investigate this, you might be able to spot a loose screw in your ducts or on your furnace. If you cannot find the loose component, be sure to call you trusted heating and cooling contractor.
